Lewisburg Arts Council

May 9 - May 10, 2008

The 39th Annual Lewisburg Arts Festival closes the weekend of May 9 and 10 with two major events that will appeal to everyone: the first annual Susquehanna Shorts Film Festival and “Seussical”, a musical for children.  The Lewisburg Arts Council is able to present both of these programs to the public at no charge, thanks to the generosity of the Woodcock Foundation.

Friday, May 9, 7-11 pm and Saturday, May 10, 1-5 pm
Susquehanna Shorts Film Festival, Campus Theatre, 413 Market St.
Nestled in the heart of the Susquehanna Valley, Lewisburg is home to the Campus Theatre, one of the only remaining single-screen art deco theatres that continues to show first run films.  Filmmakers from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, and Delaware have been invited to submit recent 'Shorts' for juror review.  All “shorts” are under 20 minutes in length, and have been filmed and produced within the last three years.  No more than ten 'Shorts' will be selected for the two-day film festival.  All selections will be shown on a rotating basis throughout the hours of the festival.  Admission is free.

Four cash prizes will be awarded.  The awards include a Judges’ Choice, a Pennsylvania Filmmaker award, and Emerging Artist award, and a People’s Choice award that will be voted on by the people who attend the Film Festival.  Your vote will count!  Awards will be given during the closing ceremonies on Saturday, May 10, beginning at 5:00 pm.  The reception is open to all, and will be a chance to meet the filmmakers.

Saturday, May 10, 1:00 pm
Seussical, The Musical
Lewisburg High School Auditorium

“Oh, the thinks you can think” when Dr. Seuss’s best-loved stories collide and cavort in an unforgettable musical caper! The Cat in the Hat is the host and emcee (and all-around mischief-maker) in this romp through the Seuss classics. When the sweet, good-natured elephant Horton hears a small cry for help coming from a small speck of dust, he promises to rescue and guard it because “a person's a person, no matter how small.”

Meanwhile, the one-feathered bird, Miss Gertrude McFuzz, desperately wants Horton to notice her. Maybe, she thinks, she just needs a more impressive tail. At the same time, the amazingly lazy Mayzie La Bird connives, cajoles and convinces Horton to sit on her egg while she goes off on a spree.

Will the planet of Who survive? Will Horton pay attention to Gertrude? Will Mayzie ever return for her egg? Dr. Seuss's beloved classic characters find themselves intertwined in an incredible crazy-quilt adventure, in which the power of imagination and the most miraculous “think” ever saves the day!

TheatreWorks USA’s production of Seussical, a musical based on the works of Dr. Seuss, will be performed free of charge, and is open to all; admission is first-come, first-served.
