Artist Bio

Bob is a photographer who enjoys creating images of his environment, both natural and man-made.  While he strives to have images representing many genres, most of his work is landscape and wildlife.  His journey in photography started in 2000 with a simple disposable 35 mm camera and a desire to show family and friends the sights from a trip to New England.  After a photo of a moose didn’t turn out as expected, he decided to upgrade to a film SLR and learn how to use it.  He practiced by making images of his family over the next 8 years.  In 2008, he made the switch to digital.  Numerous books and videos were studied over the years to teach himself the technical aspects of the equipment and techniques used to create high quality images.  He joined the Susquehanna Valley Shutterbugs in Williamsport in 2010 where he has participated in numerous photo contests and held leadership positions in the club.  He joined the Lewisburg Photo Club in 2018 to continue to learn the art.  His work can be seen in past calendars of Citizens and Northern Bank and The Daily Item, as well as past Lewisburg Arts Council’s member shows.

Artist Statement

I am a photographer who enjoys creating images of my environment, both natural and man-made.  While I strive to have images representing many genres, most of my work is landscape and wildlife.  Traveling to a remote location allows me to capture landscapes that are both relaxing and revealing.  The same can be said for my wildlife images.  Displaying animals or insects in their natural environment enables me to show what many often do not see.  The creation of these images requires more than timing and location.  There are additional challenges that I consider for my images.

Those challenges in creating compelling images are the aspects of the light, composition, position, and an interesting subject.  By controlling these aspects early in the creation of the image, I can minimize the editing to keep my images truer to the environment in which they were created.  The combination of these aspects gives the viewer a sense of being there, among the action, from a position of observation that wouldn’t normally be experienced.

Using the aspects of light, composition, and position has given my images the ability to capture details not easily seen around fleeting moments.  Often, these are the images that make viewers question how the image was captured.  As the photographer, I take joy in knowing that the viewer would spend the time to consider how the image was created.
