Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photowalk at T&D’s Cats of the World

The Lewisburg Photography Club has arranged a Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photowalk at T&D’s Cats of the World starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday October 7, 2023. Register today!

For those who have never been to T&D’s Cats of the World, it is a wild animal refuge park in Penns Creek, PA (13 miles from Lewisburg, PA).

When you visit their website, you will notice T&D’s Cats closes to the public at the end of September.  Lewisburg Photo Club member Louise Higgins, who is a long-time volunteer at T&D’s Cats, has arranged a special tour for the Photo Club. Basically, we will have the park to ourselves with no one else in the park to cause distractions.  We are to meet in T&D’s parking lot at 10 am.  The refuge’s entry fee is $15 per person (MUST be CASH).  Louise will lead our tour and one requirement is that we must stick together as a group.  Since Louise is a photographer and understands that photographers need time to take pictures, she will give us plenty of time for photos.  A normal tour takes an hour and 20 minutes.  Louise has allocated two hours for our photowalk.  Louise will explain other refuge rules before we start the tour.  Most are easy for us to follow such as “No running.”

If you have never been to T&D’s Cats of the World, this is a great chance to visit.  Others such as family members may join our photowalk as long as they understand they must follow the rules and pay the $15 fee.  They did not need to be registered on the Scott Kelby’s Photowalk website.

Dan Hyde is the Scott Kelby Walk Leader. Dan was Chair of the Lewisburg Photography Club for six years and has led many photo tours in the past.  He recommends a hat, bug spray, a water bottle, and good walking shoes as we will be walking mostly outside. Further, he recommends a lens that zooms from wide angle to telephoto. He plans to bring his 24-240 mm zoom lens.

The Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photowalk, dubbed the world’s largest global and social photography event, has grown immensely in size and popularity since the inaugural walk in 2007. In 2017, more than 25,000 photographers of all walks of life and skill levels converged to explore their corners of the world through photography and social community.  The winning image of each local Walk contest is displayed on a website for all to see and to be judged for many prizes.  For info on the prizes, see https://worldwidephotowalk.com/

The concept of a Photowalk is simple. Photowalks are created by Walk Leaders in cities all over the world. Walkers meet up at a pre-designated location – downtown areas, zoos, business parks, you name it! – to spend a few hours socializing, capturing images and sharing with like-minded people. Participants later share their best photos and select a Walk’s winning image.  The Walk’s winning image wins a modest prize and is submitted to the contest at the international level.  Last year they were very high quality and very international!

Who is Scott Kelby?  He is a highly respected professional photographer who owns and operates the company kelbyone.

We participated in the Photowalk back in 2017, 2018 and 2022 and had lots of fun. Last year we had a hike and a sunset shoot at Montour Preserve. This year our local Photowalk is at T&D’s Cats of the World. The walk is open to, literally, the whole world.

The purposes are for photographers in a city or region to walk together, get to know new faces, and have fun. And to win prizes!  In the past there was a prize for the local Photowalk (One year Dan Hyde won a Scott Kelby book on Photoshop worth $45.) and that person’s photo was submitted to the worldwide contest.  One year there were over 25,000 photographers in over 2400 photowalks. All winning photos of the local walks are posted on the website. After the event, it was fun just looking at the entries from all over the world. Please join us on Saturday October 7th from 10 am to Noon for our local Photowalk at T&D’s Cats of the World.
